Traditionally flax, hemp and, occasionally, silk were grown on San Calogero farmland. After harvest, local women spun and weaved by the fire on winter’s nights. In the last few centuries olive-growing, citrus cultivations and handicraft have increasingly replaced the farming of hemp, flax, etc.

Other traditional income sources included craftsmanship specialising in ironworks and carpentry. However, today there only a handful of artisans continue to carry on their village craft; for example, carpenters, shoe repairers and so on.
Nowadays San Calogero is expanding rapidly. Owing to the steady population growth the town has been enjoying in recent decades. The town is currently home to about just under 5,000 inhabitants.
